Kids Hunting Safety Classes

      Learning the safe and proper use of rifles is a crucial part of preparing for a young person's first hunting season. All hunters must complete safety education classes in order to obtain a hunting license. In addition to firearms safety training, youth hunter education classes also teach kids about wildlife and environmental conservation.

    • This two-day hunter education safety course has no age limit for attendees, as long as youngsters have the ability to retain information and pay attention in class. The class runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with lunch provided. Parents are encouraged to attend with their kids. Classes are limited to 70 participants, and are held three times during the year. Students must pass a standard test and perform acceptably on the rifle range.

    New Mexico Hunter Education

    • Hunter education classes are held throughout the year in the state of New Mexico depending on demand. Kids aged 11 years and older may take the hunter education alternative delivery course. The alternative delivery course is a condensed class, approximately eight hours long, not including study time. Students must pass a written exam and a test of their ability to safely handle firearms. An online manual includes information about wildlife conservation, hunting safety and outdoor safety. Kids under age 11 may participate in the regular hunter safety education course as long as they are accompanied by a parent.

    Minnesota Department of Natural Resources

    • This state course is available to students 11 years and up. Students spend at least 12 hours in the classroom and in the field, learning hunter responsibility, firearm safety and practicing on the rifle range. Classes are available in spring and fall. Before attending class, students may consult a complimentary online study guide for hunters. After completing the course, students receive a temporary certificate, which allows them to purchase a hunting license both in Minnesota and other states requiring such certification.
