Butterfly Life Cycle

    Egg

    • The adult female lays a white egg near leaves that the caterpillar can later eat. The egg will hatch after three to five days.

    Larva or Caterpillar

    • The egg hatches and turns into a small caterpillar, or larva. During this five- to 10-day stage, the caterpillar eats and grows an enormous amount.

    Chrysalis (Pupa)

    • The caterpillar attaches itself to a twig and forms an outer shell, the chyrsalis, or pupa. This is where the caterpillar will turn into a butterfly. The change will take place over a period of seven to 10 days.

    Adult

    • The adult butterfly emerges from the chrysalis after about two weeks.

    Butterfly

    • The butterfly is now completely grown and will mate, followed by the laying of eggs by the adult females.
