- Humidity causes damp spots on ceilings and walls, mold and mildew growth, blistering paint, wood rot, insect infestation and other problems. In addition, some of these problems, such as mold and mildew, have health risks.
- According to Dale Dorman, M.S., extension housing and environment specialist with the University of Georgia, several chemicals control humidity. These chemicals absorb moisture from the air. They include silica gel, activated alumina, anhydrous calcium sulfate and molecular sieves. These chemicals can be dangerous if used improperly.
- There are things you can do to control humidity naturally. Installing vents in your attic, increasing air circulation by opening windows and running fans help. Install vapor barriers in your walls, ceilings and floors, slope your land away from your house and make ensure that all plants are at least 5 feet from your home.
