How Do I Troubleshoot an Electronic Power Wheelchair?

    Check for Moisture

    • Moisture, including rain, snow and condensation, may threaten the electrical components of an electronic power wheelchair. Check the wheelchair for signs of water damage. Use a towel to dry a wet battery pack and control box. Move the wheelchair indoors and allow it to dry. Do not charge or operate the unit for 24 hours.

    Check the Axles

    • The axles of your wheelchair are located in the drive wheel assembly. Sluggish turn performance is often caused by debris in the axles. Remove dirt and debris from the axles to enhance the performance of your wheelchair.

    Examine the Battery Charger

    • A solid red light indicates power for the off-board battery charger. A flashing red light shows an interruption in power. Press the "Reset" button, located on the main circuit breaker, to restore power to the charger.

    Avoid Exposure to Electromagnetic Energy

    • EMI may cause an electronic power wheelchair to move on its own or releases it brakes. Owners shouldn't use citizens' band, or CB, radios or cellular phones while operating their wheelchairs.
