How to Buy a Designer Briefcase

    • 1). Buy a designer briefcase that fits your purpose. Designer briefcases are quite expensive, so you will need to determine what your specific needs are for your briefcase. If the briefcase is to help you look more professional, then you wouldn't want it to reflect your personal love for purple and faux fur.

    • 2). Figure out what your briefcase will need to hold. Depending on your job and lifestyle, you might want one that carries file folders, a cellphone or Blackberry, a laptop, business cards, lunch or a change of clothes.

    • 3). Decide how many compartments you want. You'll want enough separate compartments or pockets to organize everything you carry, with compartments that let papers lie flat and makes your Blackberry easily accessible.

    • 4). Think about travel. If you'll be flying with your case, you want one that can fit neatly under the seat in front of you. For international flights that observe strict weight limits on luggage, you'll also want one that won't be too heavy when full.

    • 5). Think of how you want to carry it. A wheeled case will put less strain on your back, and a shoulder strap--which can be detached if you want to look more formal--leaves your hands free when you walk.

    • 6). Settle on the look you want. If your business calls for a suit and tie, a traditional leather case might be the thing; a casual case closer to a messenger bag might work for a more casual job atmosphere.

    • 7). Begin browsing. If you can't find what you want in your local stores, there are multiple websites that offer a variety of stylish cases (see Resources below).
