Crayon Muffin Tin Activities for Toddlers

    Create New Crayons

    • Peel the wrappers from all of the crayons. Place aluminum foil muffin liners in the muffin tin and preheat the oven to 275 degrees Farenheit. Put the broken crayons in each section of the pan, filling them about 1/3 full. You can either group similar colors together to create a color-matching game for your toddler, or create crazy crayons with lots of different colors. Place the muffin tin in the oven for about 8 minutes or until all the crayons are melted. Remove the tin from the oven and set it out to cool. When the new crayons are completely cooled, remove the muffin liners and peel the new crayons out.

    Play Checkers

    • Make 12 new crayons of one color and 12 of a different color. Draw a checkers board with chalk on a sidewalk or driveway (8 by 8 squares) and color in every other square. Place your new crayon pieces on each side and play checkers with the crayons.

    Make Paperweights

    • Place a layer of crushed crayons in the muffin tin, place some small rocks in it, then place another layer of crushed crayons. Melt the crayons in the oven and allow them to cool. When the new crayon/rock combinations are completely cooled, remove and glue a round piece of felt to the bottom for a unique paperweight.

    Paint with Crayons

    • Bake the crayons in muffin tins. Instead of letting them cool and harden, paint with the melted crayons. Set the muffin tin of melted crayons on a warming tray to keep the crayons melted while your toddler uses cotton swabs to dip and paint. This activity is best for careful and calm toddlers. If you are concerned about the child around the warm tray and crayons, dip the cotton swabs in for her and hand her the "paint."
