With the final say concerning what happens on the field of play, soccer referees have an opportunity to influence both the pace and outcome of the game. Much more than enforcers of the rules and regulations, soccer referees also have a role in player development and fostering a supportive and rewarding competitive environment for all age groups. - Soccer referees enforce the rules of the game to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants. Depending on the age group, soccer referees often work in teams of two or three. Head referees oversee the play related to the ball, while sideline referees signal out-of-bounds, offsides and any fouls away from the ball which they observe. Rules enforced by referees include time limits for game play and breaks and violations related to handling the ball and dangerous play. Additional enforcement duties concerning the number of players on the field, proper equipment and substitutions also fall to the referee.
- Responsibilities related to developing an environment rich in mutual respect belong to all involved in the game of soccer, including parents, players, coaches and referees. Aside from enforcing the rules of the game, referees also help monitor player conduct on the field and on the sidelines. Abusive, foul and inappropriate language is forbidden in most leagues and referees can utilize yellow cards and red cards to warn and expel those who refuse to comply with rules intended to keep the game friendly. Referees also watch the behavior of fans and coaches to ensure the atmosphere remains supportive and friendly.
- Referees need to obtain appropriate education and training in order to become an official referee. Those just starting out can contact the local youth soccer organization in their area to inquire on requirements and availability of training classes and manuals. Local organizations prepare future referees and offer training which will allow them to referee at various levels including youth and high school games. Referees interested in increasing their knowledge and refereeing games at the national level, can do so by taking classes and receiving certification from U.S. Soccer. Soccer’s international governing body, FIFA, offers referees of the highest caliber a chance for further education to oversee international competitions.
