How to Make a Grapevine Pergola With a Swing

    • 1). Measure the area you are using for the pergola and determine the number of support posts. As a general rule, you should have a support post in place every 4 to 6 feet when working with a swing.

    • 2). Measure and dig the exact locations for each pergola post with a post digger. The holes should be at least 1-1/2 feet deep for climates without snow and 2 feet deep for climates with snow.

    • 3). Mix the concrete according to the manufacturer's directions in your wheelbarrow with the shovel. Add the water as specified by the manufacturer.

    • 4). Fill the hole halfway with concrete and press the post into the hole.

    • 5). Backfill the hole the rest of the way with concrete and verify that each post is level by using a horizontal level positioned against the top and a vertical level positioned against the side of each post.

    • 6). Leave the concrete to set for 24 hours before continuing to construct the pergola to your design.

    • 7). Lay out your pergola's roof beams and crossbeams on the ground. Make sure the layout is the exact length needed to fit your supports. Beams are spaced for the amount of shade desired. For more shade, place the beams 6 inches apart; for less shade place them 1 foot apart. Since you are installing a swing, you'll want the primary support beams to be at least 3 by 3's for optimal strength.

    • 8). Screw the crossbeams into the under-beam pieces so that the entire roof structure is complete, sturdy and ready to place on the supports.

    • 9). Lift the roof onto the supports with the help of some friends and secure it in place with metal brackets and wood screws.

    • 10

Climb onto the ladder and screw the swing installation hooks into one of the primary support beams.

    • 11

Climb down and check the height of the swing. You'll want the swing to be roughly 1-1/2 to 2 feet from the ground, as this is an average comfortable sitting height.
