Fly fishing is a form of fishing that uses a 10- to 16-foot pole and a thick floating line with a 10- to 18-foot mono filament leader attached to the end. There is a reel at the end which is used to hold line since the fly is brought back by the fisherman and not the reel as in traditional fishing. Fly fishing takes a great deal of practice to master.

    Rod

    • The rod can be anywhere from 10- to 16-feet long. These will breakdown to allow easier travel. They simply pull apart. They were originally made from bamboo but are know made from fiberglass components.

    Fighting Grip and Rod Butt

    • The fighting grip is a piece of cork or other composite material that is attached 12 to 18 inches away from the butt of the rod. It is used to hold line while fighting to land a fish. You can feed line to the fish by lessening your grip or hold it to pull the fish toward you. The butt of the rod is placed into the thigh while fighting the fish. The butt also keeps the rod end from getting damaged during travel.

    Reel Seats

    • The reel seat is at the very end of the pole and is where the reel is placed. It is screwed into place by twisting a threaded washer over the seat of the reel.

    Reel

    • The reel in fly fishing is not the same as in traditional fishing. It is where the line is stored. Since the line is thicker and heavier than traditional line, the reel is of little value when bringing in a fish. It is simply a storage area.

    Line Eyes

    • These are placed every 12 to 18 inches on the pole to help guide the line and keep it from twisting while the fly is being cast. They are made out of a combination of steel and graphite.
