How to Obtain Public Records: Georgia Criminal Court Records

    General Online Searches

    • 1). Visit the Georgia Felon Search web site to obtain copies of your Georgia criminal court records or to access information about another felony conviction.

    • 2). Type in the name, date of birth and sex of the individual offender in the appropriate boxes. Provide additional information about the offender.

    • 3). Click on the appropriate name. Pay the $15.00 fee. Use a credit card to complete the online transaction.

    Requesting Consent, Individual Records

    • 1). Request consent from the offender to access his criminal history record. Ask for a consent form from the local agency or draft a letter indicating that the offender grants consent to you to access her records. Instruct the individual to sign the consent form.

    • 2). Visit a Georgia law enforcement agency to request a copy of an offender's criminal history record. Request a name-based search, or a Letter of Good Conduct/Local Agency Response.

    • 3). Provide a signed copy of the consent form to a law enforcement official. Pay the $20.00 fee and any additional charges for fingerprint searches.

    For Employers & Non-Criminal Justice Searches

    • 1). Visit the Georgia Application Processing Services (GAPS) website for information on how to obtain a unique agency number, or an OAC. Click on the link "How to Get an ORI or OAC."

    • 2). Contact the GCIC at 404-244-2639 and choose option two. Email the agency at GAApplicant@gbi.ga.gov. Request a unique agency number in order to conduct a background check on a job applicant.

    • 3). Visit the Georgia Applicant Processing Service (GAPS) online to conduct the background check. Pay the $20.75 fee to receive only Georgia records. Pay the $40 fee to receive both Georgia and FBI records. Pay additional fees for using the GAPS system.

    Immigration/Visa/Travel Searches

    • 1). Draft a letter to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) for in-state residents. Request a Police Certificate or a fingerprint criminal record search for immigration, visa or travel. Submit two fingerprint cards.

    • 2). Draft a letter to GBI for out-of-state residents. Provide identification data and request a Police Certificate. Submit two fingerprint cards that include both flat impressions (10) and rolled fingerprints (10).

    • 3). Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with each request. Pay the appropriate fees by certified check or money order. Wait up to 14 days for the agency processing of both in-state and out-of-state immigration/visa/travel searches.
