IPhone 2.0 Software Improvements
- The only new application added to the iPhone 2.0 software was the App Store, which allows you to download and install new applications made by third-party developers directly from the phone. Opening the App Store, you simply tap on any application to see a screen shot of the app and a description. Tapping the price or "Free" button begins the download process and, after you enter your purchasing information, the new app appears on the home screen, as well as a progress bar showing the status of the download.
- Apple improved the email application in iPhone 2.0. Instead of working with one email at a time, you can now move or delete multiple messages by touching the "Edit" button, then selecting the messages to be moved. Apple also added more support for email attachments, including PowerPoint and iWork documents, as well as audio and video files. Image attachments can also be saved to the iPhone and stored in the iPhone Camera Roll.
- The iPhone 2.0 software included enhancements in location services, including GPS support in 3G. The iPhone uses cell phone towers to triangulate your position, then enhance that information to zoom into your location using Wi-Fi or GPS. If you press the "Locate" button, the iPhone continues to monitor and update your location as you move. The Camera application can also "geotag" photos you take based on your location when the picture is taken.
- The iPhone 2.0 software contains many other improvements to the first iPhone. When typing a password, the software shows the last character you typed, so you can verify you didn't hit the wrong key. You can save images from the Web browser and store them in the iPhone Camera Roll. You can also take screen shots of your iPhone display by pressing the "Home" and "Sleep/Wake" buttons simultaneously. The iPhone 2.0 supports 16 different languages. Parental controls can be enabled. You can also integrated it into an Exchange Server network or tie it into an Apple Mobile Me account.
