- 1). Prepare the vegetable(s) you wish to ripen by washing the item in cold water to remove any dirt or pesticides on it. Dry the vegetable with a clean cloth.
- 2). Open a small paper bag and place the vegetable you wish to ripen into the bag.
Add a fruit to the bag, such as a banana or an apple, to quicken the ripening process. These fruits emit a higher quantity of ethylene, the hormone that is responsible for aging fruits and vegetables. - 3). Fold down the top of the paper bag and seal it with tape or a bag clip.
- 4). Check the bag one day after storage for tomatoes; this vegetable can ripen quickly in the bag. Check your vegetables each day to assess the ripening.
- 5). Store the bagged vegetable in a dry, cool place (about 70 degrees F) during this process.
