- 1). Clean the uniform by gently vacuuming the uniform or having it dry cleaned. Dry cleaning may dry out lubricants in the uniform's fibers, which can cause the colors to yellow over time. Vacuum the uniform using a light setting, and vacuum through a nylon screen to ensure the material is not damaged.
- 2). Fold the uniform if you do not have a full-length box. Button the jacket and turn it over. Fold the arms in from the shoulders, then fold the neck of the jacket until it meets the bottom of the jacket. Fold the pants flat along the pleats, then fold in half.
- 3). Line the archival box with acid-free paper. Gently lay the clean uniform in the box and cover with more acid-free paper. Cover the box and place in storage. Be sure to keep the uniform in a dry, dark place that is properly ventilated. This will prevent damage from heat, light and moisture.
