Security Camera for the Home

Adding a security camera to the house can be an easy process which adds extra security for the home owner.

The latest buzz seems to be adding a DVR or Digital Video Recorder unit which attaches to 1 or more cameras and can be used to capture video from one or more of the attached cameras. I took the opportunity recently when building a new house to add this technology.

The first step was to provide power for each of the 4 cameras I decided to purchase for my home security plan. When the electrician was adding his circuits to the home, I asked him to install in the ceiling, 4 extra floating power points. These usually have a couple of extra meters of power cabling allowing you to extend the reach of the cables into the eaves which is where you will install your cameras.

I also took the opportunity when building the house to run coax cables from each of the planned camera locations at the eaves of the house to one of the study walls.

The DVR itself cost around $500 and sits on a wall shelf in the study. The 4 cameras are of 2 types. One is a cheaper $250 unit called a Everfocus 3 Axis 480TVL infrared dome with metal housing. This unit performs well in the day but shows nothing at night. The other two units are SecuZone High Res Vari Focal Vandal Dome Camera (540TVL) costing around $400 each and recording at night just as easily as during the day with their infra-red leds and powerful lens.

Adding the cost of each camera, the DVR and associated cable and electrician costs, the entire security plan costs around $2250.00.

This means though that I can see when someone comes to the front door. I can see when visitors come and go from our driveway. I can also watch the children play on their play equipment or trampoline all from my study. I guess this is also a deterrent to would-be robbers as the cameras can be set to record to a hard drive inside the DVR unit. This DVR can record all 4 channels at the same time at 25 frames per second which is fine for video quality.
