Don"t Miss Out on One of the World"s Best Rainforest Reserves
Guyana is a small South American country on the north coast of the continent, and while many people aren't aware of its existence at all, the reality is that it is one of the most important natural areas in the world.
The Iwokrama Rainforest Reserve covers an area of over 1,432 square miles, and is vital because it is one of only four remaining areas of pristine tropical forest in the world. Because of this, there is only a limited amount of tourism in the area, and all aspects of the wildlife and visits to the forest is carried out in a restricted way to make sure that Iwokrama continues to be a vital part of natural history of the world.
The Size And Location Of The Reserve
The sheer size of the reserve is one of the most interesting parts of this particular forest, with 371,000 hectares being a very large area that is quite difficult to envisage. The reality is that it is around fifty three miles wide and around fifty miles from north to south, with a solitary road that runs through the forest connecting the capital Georgetown with the town of Lethem. The reserve is quite central in Guyana, and occupies around two per cent of the total territory of the country.
Biodiversity And The Wildlife In The Reserve
One of the most interesting things about the Iwokrama Rainforest Reserve is that it is one of the most diverse areas of South America in terms of its wildlife, with the Giant Anteater being one of the species that is present in the park. The rivers and lakes of the park are also teeming with life, with over 420 species of fish having been identified as being present in the park. There are also a wealth of birds and bats to be found in the high trees about the forest floor, with over 500 different species of birds and 90 bat species in the reserve.
The Iwokrama Canopy Walkway
Like most forests, the majority of life and activity actually happens way above the ground level view that most visitors get to see, so one of the most popular attractions in the reserve is the spectacular canopy walkway. Being of particular interest to birdwatchers and those coming to the area to spot different species, the walkway is thirty three meters above ground level, and offers several platforms connected by walkways that help to offer an unique perspective of the area.
Ecotourism In The Area
An important part of Guyana's plans for the area is to develop a small eco-tourism industry for Iwokrama that will not only help to draw visitors to the country, but will also help to spread the word about the ecological importance of the reserve.
There are a variety of different options available with local guides that can offer an introduction to the culture, and scientists and wildlife experts that can offer guided tours and insights into some of the things that can be seen in the area. With a River Lodge that offers spectacular accommodation and some wonderful hiking trails, this is certainly something that is likely to become more popular among those looking to get off the beaten track.
Volunteering In The Rainforest Reserve
A great opportunity for those who are looking to make a contribution to the continued survival of the forest reserve is that there are often volunteering opportunities available, as the river lodge is also home to the Iwokrama Research Center.
The work can vary from processing the results of research through to helping to welcome guests and providing activities for the guests. This is a great way to get involved and offers a fascinating experience in this remote and interesting location.
