How to Plant Seeds Into Soil
- 1). Buy seeds online or from a garden center. Read the seed packets before you buy to make sure you can start the seeds. Seed packets will have a map showing what months the seeds should be planted in different locations. They will also note the sun, soil and water requirements.
- 2). Prepare the garden bed or container for seed planting. If you're planting in a garden bed, break up the soil with a shovel to aerate it. Remove any weeds or rocks. Add potting soil or compost to enrich the garden bed. If you're growing in a container, fill the container with potting soil and be sure to use a container with drainage holes in the bottom.
- 3). Review the information on your seed packet. Different types of seeds prefer to be planted at different depths; the seed packet will tell you how deep to plant your seeds.
- 4). Using a small trowel or your finger, create a long trench in your garden bed or container. Remove seeds from the seed packet and drop in the trench, following the spacing guidelines on the packet.
- 5). Cover the trench with soil and water the area thoroughly. If you're planting several types of seeds, you may wish to use garden stakes that note what has been planted.
- 6). Continue to water the garden bed or container daily. The best times of day to water are in the early morning or at dusk. Most seeds germinate in one to two weeks.
