How to Obtain a Police Report in D.C.

    • 1). Make sure you have the necessary information. You will need the date and time, location and reason behind the police report. In addition, you will need the six-digit number assigned to the incident -- also known as the CCN number.

    • 2). Call the police station in the district in which the incident took place. These are arranged geographically from first to seventh.

    • 3). Request the police report either in-person, or by mail.

      If you would like to pick up the report in person, make your way to the Henry J. Daly Building at DC Metropolitan Police Department Headquarters at 300 Indiana Avenue, N.W., Room 3075. The Public Documents Unit is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. The fee may be paid with cash, or a money order made out to the DC Treasurer.

      If you would like to obtain the police report by mail, you need to write a letter including your full name, the time and date of the incident, where it took place, and the CCN number. The letter must be notarized, and you can only pay the fee via money order, payable to DC Treasurer. You must also include a self-addressed, stamped envelope in your letter.
