Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen to Coach on TUF Brazil
It's kind of rare when a person interviewing someone on live television receives surprise news about themselves from the interviewee. It's also rare when someone interviews their own boss. Both of these things actually happened on a recent segment of Fox Sports Live when light heavyweight/middleweight fighter Chael Sonnen, during an interview with UFC President Dana White, learned that he would be a coach opposite Wanderlei Silva on the third season of "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil".
"You two will coach The Ultimate Fighter," White said. "You will have a ton of security down there with you, and it should be a fun season."
Why the need for security? Well, hardcore MMA fans will tell you that a Sonnen has said a lot of things about Brazil and Brazilians which drew the ire of Silva, who was born in Curitiba, Brazil. Here are a few of the things that Sonnen has said that have angered Silva and his countrymen:
1. Sonnen once referred to the black beltAnderson Silva received from the Nogueira brothers in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as "a toy that you get in a happy meal." The Nogueira's are widely known as great fighters and Brazilian ambassadors of the sport.
2. "Greetings from Sao Paulo! I'm learning the language: breakdancing in the Special Olympics is called capoiera and cocaine is called brunch."- Source
3. "Machida is not a bad guy; he's a victim of the Brazilian education system. There are better ways to get electrolytes than drinking piss."- Source
4. "I don't have anything against the Brazilian people...I've got something against a Brazilian sitting a few feet from me (Anderson)...Your women are all OK with me, so feel free to give me a call or pay me a visit.
But, as far as my impression, it's a lot like America...when I was a little kid, I'd go outside with my friends and we'd talk about the latest technology, in medicine, gaming and American ingenuity--and Anderson and the Brazilian kids are sitting outside playing in the mud."- Source
Of course, there's been more. But after some of this went down, Silva caught up with Sonnen. When he did, he told Sonnen, amongst other things, the following:
“In Brazil we have a saying – you have respect, you don’t lose your teeth."
And the way the former PRIDE Fighting Welterweight Champion said it left many with a lingering feeling that if Sonnen had something in contradiction, there would have been a fight right then and there. But that's when think got interesting with Sonnen. You see, he began pushing for a fight with Silva later on.
"Wanderlei drives me insane," Sonnen said, reinforcing this notion. "Wanderlei Silva tells the media he wants to fight me. I would love to fight Wanderlei. Wanderlei insists that fight has never been offered. That's been a big marquee fight for years – to believe he hasn't been offered that fight is ridiculous, and it pisses me off. All I need for him is to say he doesn't want to do it, then I'm out. I'm not a bully, and I'm not going to pick on him – but if he continues to say it, he's going to continue to get me to respond."
Now the two are slated to coach opposite one another on the television show and fight some time in 2014. Talk about an interesting storyline.
