How to Clean the Drain Cover in a Swimming Pool

    • 1). Power off the pool's filter so water doesn't flow into the drain when you're removing the cover.

    • 2). Dive down to the pool drain cover at the bottom of the pool and remove the cover. Different covers will require different removal methods. Some will require removing screws, some will twist off, while others can be pried off with a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 3). Brush off any stubborn grime or dirt with a scrub brush. This dirt has accumulated on the grill of the drain cover because of water constantly moving through it.

    • 4). Add 1 cup of bleach to 3 gallons of water in a bucket. Soak the cover in the bucket for a few hours to remove any other debris as well as disinfect the cover.

    • 5). Air-dry the drain cover for 24 hours so all of the bleach has dissipated. Connect the cover back onto the drain. Repeat steps 2 through 5 with any remaining drain covers and turn your pool filter back on.
