How to Measure an Elk

    • 1). Count the number of points (tips of the tines) on each antler, and write down the number. Make sure to include the beam tips (first on the rack) as they are part of the count.

    • 2). Measure the distance between the two main beam tips on the racks. Measure to the nearest 1/8 inch. Write down the distance.

    • 3). Find the two largest tips, and measure the distance to the nearest 1/8 inch between them. Write this down.

    • 4). Measure the farthest distance between the main racks at the furthest point. This is the rack Main Distance measurement. As with all measurements of the rack, go to the nearest 1/8 inch.

    • 5). Measure the length of the longest tines on the racks, and write this down. Also measure any abnormal tines that don't have a symmetrical mate. Write this down.

    • 6). Measure the length of each tine and its mate to the nearest 1/8 inch. Write them down as "left" and "right," followed by the number of the tine from bottom to top. For example, if it is the first tine at the left bottom, it would read xx inches, L #1.
