The Hewlett-Packard Photosmart R817 is a beginner-level point and shoot digital camera. It offers the benefits of digital photography, such as instant photo review, without the complexity of more advanced models. The R817 offers fairly standard features for a camera in its price range. Due to its age, its specifications are slightly less advanced than those of cameras produced in 2009 and later.

    Core Features

    • The R817 is a 5-megapixel camera powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Its shutter speed ranges between 16 seconds and 1/2000 of a second, and it can shoot up to 2 frames per second. The lens has an optical 5x zoom, which is 6mm to 29mm in traditional focal length, and its maximum aperture ranges between f/2.8 and f/4.7. Its ISO speed ranges from 100 to 400.

    Additional Features

    • The camera uses an SD memory card to record media, which it displays on a 2-inch liquid crystal display (LCD). The camera has 15 shooting modes, three of which are semi-manual, and has a built-in flash effective up to 12 feet. It can also record standard-definition videos as well as still images. Its only output is a universal serial bus (USB) port.

    Pricing and Availability

    • The R817 can be purchased used for around $160 USD as of 2010. Since its production run started 2005 and ended in 2008, it will most likely be available only at online camera specialty stores or within public sale listings. Large electronics retailers will tend to carry newer or more popular camera models.
