Stereo Removal and Speaker Wiring

• 1). Remove your car's stereo using your stereo removal tools. Typically, this process involves the use of two thin bars that slide into the sides of the stereo, allowing you to pull the unit from your car's dashboard without causing any damage to the stereo or the car. Be aware, however, that every stereo and every car is unique, so the process may vary.

  Use your stereo wiring diagram to identify the wires on your stereo unit that connect to your speakers. Every stereo is unique, but speaker wires typically come in pairs and are identified by striped, colored wires. Connect a length of speaker wire to each pair of wires, making sure to connect the striped side of your speaker wiring to the wire connected to your stereo designated as negative (-).

Run the speaker wires that you connected in Step 2 to the locations in your car where the speakers will be housed, making sure that the wiring has enough length to reach each housing comfortably. Be sure to tuck any exposed length of wire underneath the car mats and panels so that you achieve a safe and clean installation.

  Connect the striped side of your speaker wire to the smaller, negative (-) tab of your Kenwood speaker, and the unstriped side of your speaker wire to the larger, positive (+) tab of your Kenwood speaker. Be sure not to mix up this polarity, because an incorrect polarity connection can cause damage to the stereo and will hinder the performance of the speaker.
  
  
• 5). Screw each speaker into the housing provided in your car, using the tabs on the rim of the speaker to connect it to the housing. Typically, Kenwood speakers are designed with multiple tabs along the rim of each speaker to make this connection as easy as possible.
