What is Base Building?

Definition:

Base building workouts help athletes from getting out of breath come race day. Base building increases your ability to exercise aerobically (e.g. your heart rate is around 70% - 80% its max).

Building your base means doing workouts at an easy pace. You should be able to talk comfortably while exercising.

A good aerobic base allows your body to use oxygen to create energy more efficiently.

You'll be able to swim, bike, or run longer with less effort, which is what you want as an endurance athlete.
