DIY Steam Cleaning a Carpet

    • 1). Vacuum the carpet to remove dirt, dust and debris.

    • 2). Remove the water tank from the steam cleaner and fill with hot tap water.

    • 3). Add detergent made specifically for steam cleaning machines, following the label's directions. A chemical-free cleaning can be accomplished by omitting the detergent.

    • 4). Replace the water tank onto the steam cleaner and plug the machine in. Push the cleaner to the furthest corner of the room from the point of exit.

    • 5). Turn the machine on and slowly push it forward 2 to 3 feet while holding the water release lever down on the steam cleaner handle.

    • 6). Release the lever and slowly pull the machine towards you to suck up the water and dirt. Continue in this manner until the entire area has been cleaned, working in small sections towards the exit point.

    • 7). Empty the water discharge chamber as needed and refill the water tank with fresh hot tap water and detergent as necessary until the entire room has been cleaned.

    • 8). Allow the carpet to dry for 24 hours before walking on it to prevent damage and dirt buildup.
