How to Set up a Fishing Pole

    Setup Fishing Equipment

    • 1). Attach your chosen reel to your fishing rod. Place the reel into the reel seat and tighten it. Be sure not to overdo it.

    • 2). Spool the test line onto your fishing rod and reel. You can also purchase a reel that has the test line prespooled.

    • 3). Thread the test line up through the holes in your fishing rod. Make sure you get a lot of slack in your line after threading it, so that you can easily attach the rest of the fishing equipment.

    • 4). Slip your bobber stop onto the test line. The most popular bobber is a rubber stop that looks like a grain of rice with a hole at each end that the test line is threaded through. The bobber stop is necessary to keep the bobber from sliding past the depth that you choose.

    • 5). Thread a small bead directly under the bobber stop. The small bead is necessary to keep the bobber stop from sliding down into the bobber when a fish is hooked and pulls on the test line.

    • 6). Slide your slip bobber up the test line.

    • 7). Thread the test line through the eye of the hook to attach it to your test line.

    • 8). Clip two small split-shot sinkers to your test line using a pair of pliers. Clip them about 10 inches above the hook and an inch or two apart from each other.

    • 9). Put your choice of bait on the hook and you're ready to start freshwater fishing. You can use an earthworm, a bee-moth, a minnow or a cricket. Keep in mind that your choices for bait are not limited to the ones mentioned.
