How to Build a Garbage Bin

Prepare to Install the Garbage Bin

    • 1). Remove the cabinet door and drawer. Use your screw driver to unscrew the hinges for the cabinet and set the door and screws aside. Remove the drawer above the cabinet (optional). This is only if you want to throw away trash without opening the cabinet door; you can lift the flap where the drawer used to be an throw the garbage through the opening.

    • 2). Take off the gliders for the drawer using a screw driver to remove the screws.

    • 3). Use a hand saw to remove the metal rail in the center of the drawer opening, where the drawer sits.

    • 4). Place the door, hinges and screws aside. You want to have everything in place when you re-attach the door after the bin is installed.

Build and Install your Garbage Bin

    • 1). Measure the height and width of the trash can to get the dimensions needed to build the bin around it. The bin needs to be a few inches wider than the trash can but able to fit in the cabinet.

    • 2). Cut your 1/2-inch plywood to the dimensions of the area around the trash can. Remember that the rectangle box needs to be a few inches wider and taller than the trash can so that the can fits inside properly. There should be six sides to the base, equal-sized top and bottom pieces and four sides of equal size.

    • 3). Start joining your plywood pieces together. Spread a little bit of glue along the side edge of one of your side pieces of plywood and press it together with another side piece. Use a positioning clamp to hold the pieces together, until the glue dries, by slipping the clamp on the edge of one board and sliding the second board on the other side of the clamp. Slide your hand over the edge of the two pieces of plywood to make sure they are flush and then nail them together. Repeat this step for the other two pieces of side plywood and top and bottom pieces. You should have a rectangular box with six sides.

    • 4). Assemble the base for the bin the same as in step 6. Add glue, clamp the sides and nail the pieces together. Your base has three sides and a bottom. Attach heavy duty cabinet drawer gliders to the bottom of the base and the bottom part of the cabinet using a drill with screw driver bit and screws.

    • 5). Prepare to make the base for the garbage bin. This part of the pull-out bin fastens to the inside of the cabinet and holds the trash can. Your ball bearing drawer glides attach the base to the cabinet. You need to cut four pieces of plywood an inch or two wider than the width and half of the height of the garbage bin built in steps 5 and 6, three for the sides and a bottom piece to hold the bin. This base does not need to be as tall as the trash can, half or less is good.

    • 6). Make the opening to insert the trash can in the bin. Place the trash can upside down on top of the garbage bin. Use a pencil to trace around the mouth of the trash can and remove it from the bin. Drill a hole inside the outline. Insert the jigsaw blade in the hole, and begin sawing along the traced line. Remove the cut out piece of wood. Insert your trash can into the bin and your bin into the base.

    • 7). Reattach the cabinet door and hinges.
