Salix Purpurea Planting Instructions
- 1). Test the soil before planting Salix Purpurea to determine the pH of your soil. You can purchase a soil test kit in a plant nursery or garden center.
- 2). Amend the soil with lime if the pH is below 4.5. Mix in peat moss with the soil if the pH is above 8.0. Before adding the required amendment, break up the soil with a pitchfork. Check the packaging label on the amendment for the correct amount to use.
- 3). Dig a hole twice the width of the Salix Purpurea's nursery container. The depth of the hole should match the container's height. Genrly remove the Salix Purpurea from the nursery container. Lower the shrub's root ball into the center of the hole.
- 4). Backfill the hole with the original soil. Tamp the soil down around the salix purpurea to remove air pockets that can cause the roots to dry out, even with continued watering.
- 5). Water the Salix Purpurea thoroughly with a soaker hose. Supply the shrub with at least 1 inch of water per week, maintaining moisture at a depth of 1 inch at all times during the first growing season.
