When Should Hummingbird Feeders Be Hung in the Spring?

    Time Frame

    • Hummingbirds appear in the Gulf Coast in late February. In the southern states, such as Georgia and South Carolina, feeders should be hung in March. Hummingbirds reach Virginia and Missouri in April, and Ohio and Illinois by mid-May. Remove the feeders in the fall, approximately 1 to 2 weeks after you see the last hummingbird.

    Food

    • Boil four parts water with one part sugar to create a nectar. Allow the mixture to cool, then place it in the feeders. Clean your feeder every 2 to 3 days and fill with new nectar. This will prevent the feeders from molding.

    Types

    • Feeders should have the color red on them to attract hummingbirds, and should be placed in a location where ants and other insects won't be able to access them. The feeders can have supports for the birds to sit on, but this isn't necessary, because the birds can fly right up to the feeder to feed.
