How to Get a Business License in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

    • 1). Navigate to the city of Pittsburgh's website. (See Resources.)

    • 2). Click on the "Departments" link in the navigation pane at the top of the website. When you click on this link it will take you to a listing of Pittsburgh city departments. Select the Bureau of Building Inspection link. The bureau handles business licensing.

    • 3). Click on the link for "License Information." This link will take you to a list of businesses that are required to be licensed. Examples of such businesses are: pawnbrokers, junk dealers, pool halls, amusement places, transient vendors, street vendors, parking lots, and bed and breakfast establishments. A link to the "License Information" page is located in the Resources section of this article.

    • 4). Click on the type of license for which you would like to apply. Scroll through the list and see whether the business you are planning on starting requires a license. If it does, click on the link on the page, and more detailed instructions will be given, including the appropriate fee and what other documents are necessary. In most instances a link to a copy of the license application will be found on the page.     • 5). Complete the application and submit it to the Pittsburgh Bureau of Building Inspections with the necessary fee and the other required documents.
