How to Clean a Rusted Brass Fireplace Screen
- 1). Prepare your cleaning area. Spread the sheet out on a patio or on a clean area of grass. You can sit on the sheet and place the screen on the sheet for easy cleaning.
- 2). Mix up a cleaning solution. Use a cup of coarse salt and a cup of lemon juice to scrub the entire screen with the nylon scrubber. The lemon juice and salt will create a moist salt scrub that will remove dirt, grime and most of the rust from the screen without scraping the metal.
- 3). Scrub the screen with the lemon treatment. Moisten your scrub brush with water when necessary, but rely heavily on the lemon juice and salt to get the best results. Rinse the screen down periodically to prevent the salt from caking on and to enable you to see where you still need work. You will need to dry off the rinsed areas of the screen so that more rust does not form while you are working.
- 4). Attack stubborn rust spots with a toothbrush and Worcestershire sauce. Dip the toothbrush in the sauce and the apply it using firm pressure and circular scrubbing motions to the rust spots. If necessary, leave the sauce on the spots for up to 15 minutes before refreshing the treatment and scrubbing it all off.
- 5). Wipe down the entire screen. First use a damp cloth to get rid of all the lemon juice and other solutions, then use a dry cloth to prevent further rust formation. Now you are ready to enjoy your beautiful, shiny brass screen.
