How to Care for Holly Bush
- 1). Water during times of drought in the summer when rainfall is less than 1 inch, suggests The National Gardening Association. Also, water in the late fall before the first frost.
- 2). Fertilize with a granular slow-release fertilizer that is made for acid-loving bushes. Apply once a year in the early spring. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for how much fertilizer to use according to the size of your holly bush.
- 3). Apply a 2-inch layer of mulch to retain moisture and prevent weeds. Make sure the mulch does not touch the trunk of the bush. In the spring, apply a layer of compost, such as used coffee grounds, suggest American Forests.
- 4). Prune the holly to keep it neat during the growing season. Take off any dead branches and leaves as necessary. In December while dormant, thoroughly prune back the holly before the spring season to promote to new growth.
- 5). Protect during the winter by adding another layer of mulch to protect the roots during the cold season. Cover the holly with burlap to protect it against cold winds and snow if you live in a cold climate.
