How to Crochet Accessories for the Kitchen

    • 1). Crochet a dish cloth. Dish cloths are a great way to practice crochet stitch patterns, because you only have to crochet a square. Use a size H crochet hook and cotton crochet yarn for the best results; the cotton yarn will be sturdy for repeated scrubbing, washing and drying. Crochet a square using any stitch pattern you like, making it approximately 10 inches square in size when you finish. Now your dish cloth is complete.

    • 2). Make a towel. For a traditional towel, use the same philosophy as you used with the dish cloth, but make it bigger. Instead of 10 inches square, make a towel that is 20 inches by 30 inches. Use the same stitch pattern you used for your dish cloth, and you will have a matched set.

    • 3). Use tulle to make a dish scrubber. Tulle is a rough, net-like fabric you can find in the wedding aisle at craft or mass retail stores. It is easy to wash and wear, and its rough texture makes it ideal for scrubbing dishes. Crochet your dish scrubber in any shape, from squares to circles or even hearts. The key is to use single crochet stitches so your stitching will be nicely tight and the end result will be a scrubby without too many holes in the middle.

Another way to do it is to increase your hook size to an I or J and combine one strand of tulle with one strand of cotton yarn as you crochet. Now your dish scrubber will be soft and strong at the same time.

    • 4). Embellish a dish towel. Use a large eye blunt needle and a length of cotton yarn to make a blanket stitch edging along the short end of a dish towel. Then use that same yarn and your crochet hook to crochet into the blanket stitching as if it were your starting chain. Make three rows in a lacy pattern stitch, such as double crochet stitching, and then begin to decrease your stitches on the ends of each row by making two stitches in one on each end. When your stitches become a band of about 2 inches wide, continue to crochet for 4 more inches. Make a buttonhole, then crochet one more inch. Fold the handle you have just made over onto the front of your stitches and position a button to line up with the button hole. Sew on the button, and now you have a towel that will hang from the handle of an oven or refrigerator.
