How to Sew a Basket Ruffle

    • 1). Measure the perimeter of the basket you're working with, using a tape measure.

    • 2). Cut a rectangle of fabric the same length as the perimeter of the basket, plus four inches. Make the fabric six inches wide.

    • 3). Fold over each edge of the fabric 1/4 inch and sew on the sewing machine, making a clean hem on all sides.

    • 4). Sew the two ends of the fabric together on the sewing machine, so you now have a circle piece.

    • 5). Cut a piece of elastic that is the length of the perimeter of the basket, minus 1 inch. Fold the circle of fabric over itself, so you have a double layer of fabric that is about 3 inches tall.

    • 6). Sew the ends of the elastic together to make a circle of elastic. Tuck the sewn elastic inside the pocket made from the folded over fabric.

    • 7). Sew a line just under the bottom of the elastic, making a hem all along the fabric so that the elastic is secured inside the fabric.

    • 8). Stretch the ruffle around the outside of the basket.
