How to Have a Laptop & Desktop Computer on a Router

    Laptop Connection

    • 1). Plug the router into the modem by plugging an Ethernet cable into the Ethernet jack located on the back of the modem. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the WAN jack located on the back of the router. The shorter the Ethernet cable, the better. Longer cords degrade the signal and causes issues like slow Internet speeds. Place the modem and router as close together as possible.

    • 2). Access the Wi-Fi manager on the laptop. The easiest way to do so is by double-clicking the Wi-Fi icon located in the lower-right corner of the screen. It looks like mobile phone signal bars.

    • 3). Select "Wi-Fi On" from the drop-down menu on the lower left of the manager. At this point, the computer locates your network.

    • 4). Check the "Save Network" box and then click "Connect" to establish a network connection.

    Desktop Connection

    • 1). Plug an Ethernet cable into the LAN jack located on the back of the router. Use the lowest numbered LAN jack available to make it easier to see if the computer is receiving Internet connection.

    • 2). Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet jack located on the back of the computer. The Ethernet jack usually has a green light next to or underneath it. It may be labeled "Ethernet" or "Modem." Inspect the router to ensure the light that corresponds with the LAN jack you used is lit up.

    • 3). Reboot the computer to ensure the computer establishes Internet connection. Some computers cannot establish a hot connection when a cable is inserted into the Ethernet jack. Rebooting allows the computer to search for a connection while it boots up.
