Who Invented the Hot Tub?
- In the early 20th century, seven brothers emigrated from Italy to California. Their last name, Jacuzzi, became the name of their joint business, founded in 1915.The brothers were engineers by trade and first created aviation products, including the pitched propeller and the first enclosed cabin monoplane.
- In 1956, the Jacuzzi brothers wanted to help family members who suffered from arthritis. As a result, they invented the first hydrotherapy pump, the J-300 portable pump. Hydrotherapy is the term used to describe the use of water to treat body ailments. The J-300 was used in the bathtubs to agitate the water and in return would soothe a person's bodily aches and pains, including those caused from arthritis. Soon, the business became well known and sold pumps across country.
- Roy Jacuzzi, a third generation Jacuzzi, started learning the family business as a teenager. He continued on with family tradition and took it to the next level. He invented the first whirlpool bath in 1968. This bath had the jets embedded in the sides of the tub.
- The Jacuzzi company invented larger tubs that could hold more people. They also started to incorporate heating systems, to keep the water hot, and filtration systems, to keep the water clean. In 1970, Jacuzzi launched the first hot tub, also known as a spa.
- Today "Jacuzzi" is often synonymous with the term "hot tub." In general, hot tubs are larger, have better filtration systems and include stronger jets. You can have a stand-alone hot tub or have one built into your landscaping or near your pool. Hot tub surrounds are typically wood or stone and even include add-ons, like refrigerators and retractable televisions.
