Municipal Theater and Santo Antônio Chapel
Inaugurated in 1884, the lovely St. Anthony Chapel on Praça do Suspiro gained a tower designed by architect Lúcio Costa, of Brasília fame, in 1948.
To the left of the chapel is the Municipal Theater, one of the venues which host the Nova Friburgo International Winter Festival.
Jan.20, 2011 Update: The square and the chapel were devastated by the rains (watch a video on G1). Only yesterday, a week after the worst rains, was it possible to enter the chapel, climbing over rubble. Two cars were dragged into the nave by the flood. One wall collapsed. The main structure, including the bellfry, is still standing. The altar is practically intact.
The theater is still standing, but I still don't have reports on its condition.
Nova Friburgo's chairlift was destroyed when the slope behind the church came down as a mudslide. So was great part of Recanto Itália, the next-door hotel by the same owner (see photos).
