How to Make a Decorative Knot
- 1). Braid four cords as desired. When you are finished, reserve enough cord to tie your switch knot. Switch knots are tied 3/4 of the way down the length of the cord. For example, if your cord measures 4 inches, the switch knot is tied at the point where there is 1 inch of cord remaining.
- 2). Using the four cords (two for knotting, two for filling), separate the two filler cords (inner cords) and place the two knotter cords (outer cords) over them. Make sure the knotters are placed between the fillers. The roles of the cords have reversed since their placement has "switched" -- thus the name of this decorative knot.
- 3). Make a square knot to hold the switch knot in place. A square knot is made from two consecutive half knots. To form a half knot, place the outer right cord over the two inside cords but under the left cord. Pull the left cord to the right, making sure it passes under the inner cords and up through the loop that forms. Pull on the cords tightly so the knot is taut.
- 1). Loop one piece of cord around itself twice so it creates three different strands.
- 2). Bring the bottom strand over the center and the top strand over the "new" center, and braid the three strands together as you would braid hair. Pull the cords taut and make tight braids.
- 3). Repeat until you run out of cord. Keep the knot tied off by allowing the end of the cord to emerge outside the braid.
