Many people place hummingbird feeders in their yards to attract the small, hovering, colorful birds. But you can also attract hummingbirds by planting specific flowers. Hummingbirds like flowers that are red, pink or orange. They're also drawn to trumpet-shaped flowers. Plant a variety of flowers for hummingbirds, so that there is always something in bloom for them. - Hummingbirds love springtime-blooming azaleas. You can find azaleas in a variety of colors, such as pink, orange, red or white. Plant your azaleas in well-drained, acidic soil. Depending on the variety of azalea you choose, the plant may prefer full or partial sun.
- The foxglove, or digitalis, is a tubular-shaped flower that hummingbirds are drawn to. Varieties of the foxglove produce flowers from spring through summer in a variety of colors, such as light yellow, deep orange or pale pink. Plant your foxglove in well-drained, fertile soil, and in partial sun.
- Plant your bougainvillea where it will receive full sun and in slightly dry soil. This plant has large, showy blooms that attract hummingbirds. They come in many bright colors, such as pink, purple and peach. Don't over-fertilize your bougainvillea because, although they will produce beautiful foliage, they won't flower.
- The firebush produces large masses of small, tubular red flowers. This plant thrives in hot, dry conditions and blooms all summer long. It should be planted in full sun for best flower production. The firebush will work in almost any type of soil, as long as it's well drained.
- Petunias are traditional garden favorites of people and hummingbirds. They are available in a wide variety of colors, such as shades of pink, purple and white. Plant your petunias in moist, well-drained soil under full sun.
