New Attraction in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais

Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB), Belo Horizonte's newest cultural attraction, opened its doors to the public today.
Part of Circuito Cultural Praça da Liberdade, an arts and culture hub surrounding Belo Horizonte's Liberty Square, the new cultural venue is the fourth CCBB in Brazil; the other units are in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Brasília.
"Elles - Women Artists at the Museum of Modern Art", featuring about 120 works from Centre Pompidou in Paris, created from 1907 to 2010 by 65 artists from several countries - including Frida Kahlo, Louise Bourgeois, Nan Goldin, and Lygia Clark - is the opening exhibition at the center maintained by Banco do Brasil.
Circuito Cultural Praça da Liberdade is a pivotal element in a broad strategy for Minas Gerais culture (read more), with several major venue openings to take place in time for 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, in which BH is a host city.
The circuit, which has drawn nearly 2 million visitors since it was launched in 2010, comprises Palácio da Liberdade, newly launched as a museum; Memorial Minas Vale; the Folk Art Center (CAP-Cemig) and other museums, cultural and educational facilities. Twelve attractions in all are scheduled to be open before the end of 2014; work is under way on the three last - Casa Fiat de Cultura, Inhotim Escola (associated with Inhotim, in nearby Brumadinho) - and Museu do Automóvel, or the Automobile Museum.
CCBB-BH occupies a 1926 building designed by architect Luiz Signorelli and listed by Iepha, the Minas Gerais Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute, in 1977. Restoration started in 2009 under architect Flávio Grillo, a specialist in monuments and historic centers whose projects in Minas Gerais include Station Square in Belo Horizonte and the Saint Francis of Assisi Church in the historic, UNESCO-listed center of Ouro Preto.
Architect Eneida Silveira Bretas signed the project which adapted the building for its multipurpose cultural spaces.
The center received a R$37 million investment in restoration, repairs, and the purchase of furniture and equipment. It has an exhibition area of 1,200 square meters, a multimedia room, a 270-seat theater, space for educational programs, a cafe, a snack bar, and a shop.
An area of 8,000 square meters opened on Aug.28, 2013 and 4,000 square meters will be inaugurated in the second phase of the project. The center's exhibition space is said to be the largest in Brazil.
The award-winning cultural centers maintained by Banco do Brasil started with the opening of CCBB Rio de Janeiro in 1989. The Brasilia unit (CCBB DF, for Distrito Federal) opened in October 2000, and the S. Paulo unit in April 2001. Since 1989, the bank has invested more than R$300 million in programs held at the centers, not including expenses with restoration, human resources and technology.
Rio took the lead in the number of visitors in 2012 (2.235.354), followed by Brasília (1,215,763) and São Paulo (998,858). R$ 41 million were invested in 2012 programs, which include education initiatives for the community as well as entertainment.
