How to Paint Your Own Wooden Drapery Rod

    • 1). Sand the existing finish from the wooden drapery rod, using a coarse 60-grit sandpaper. Inappropriate sanding technique will carve scars in the rod. Consistently move the sandpaper in the direction of the wood grain to prevent this.

    • 2). Dust the drapery rod with a clean shop rag. Smooth the rod by sanding with a finer, 110-grit sandpaper.

    • 3). Dampen a rag with mineral spirits and wipe the entire drapery rod with the rag. Wait 15 minutes for the spirits to evaporate.

    • 4). Place the wooden drapery rod on a canvas dropcloth in a ventilated area, such as an open garage or porch.

    • 5). Coat one side of the drapery rod with shellac spray primer. Spray in a steady side-to-side motion. Eliminate the potential for ugly drips and sags by maintaining an 8-inch distance between the wooden drapery rod and spray tip. Wait an hour, flip the rod over and prime the other side. Wait another hour before painting.

    • 6). Coat one side of the drapery rod with acrylic spray enamel. Spray with a side-to-side motion, keeping an 8-inch distance between the wooden drapery rod and spray tip. Wait two hours, flip the rod over and paint the other side. Let the paint dry and cure for four hours before hanging the rod.
