How to Create Spilling Paint Wall Finishes

    • 1). Lay a drop cloth across the floor of the room. Creating a spilling paint finish can be a messy task, and this protects the floor by absorbing any paint spills.

    • 2). Rub across the surface of the wall with 180-grit sandpaper. This is an important step in the painting preparation process that creates a smooth surface and ensures proper paint adhesion.

    • 3). Pour a small amount of a concentrated wall-cleaning solution onto a rag and wipe it across the wall to remove any dust and debris.

    • 4). Pour some of the first paint color into a paint tray.

    • 5). Dip a paintbrush into the paint and rub any excess paint on the side of the tray.

    • 6). Brush paint across the entire surface of the wall, wait for the paint to dry and repeat with a second coat. This creates a solid, even base coat.

    • 7). Pour some of the second paint color into a paint tray.

    • 8). Dip a paintbrush into the paint, coating the brush with extra paint. Lift it up on one side of the wall at the level you want the spilling paint look to start, and press the brush firmly against the wall.

    • 9). Move the brush slowly across the wall. You can move in a straight line or create curves as you brush over the wall, but either way ensure you maintain a fluid connection with the wall and keep the brush pressed firmly against the wall to squeeze paint off the brush. As you make your way across the wall, paint drips off of the brush and down the wall, creating the spilled paint finish. Reapply paint to your brush as necessary; the more paint you put on the brush, the thicker and longer the paint spills will drop.

Wait for the paint to dry completely. This should take between 10 to 12 hours; refer to the instructions on the paint to be sure.

Pour some of the clear epoxy paint into a paint tray.

    • 12

Dip a paintbrush into the paint and rub any excess paint on the side of the tray.

Brush paint across the entire surface of the wall. This adds a clear coating over the spilled paint finish and adds a layer of protection to prevent any paint chipping.
