How to Paint a Figurine
- 1). Select the figurine to be painted. Many plaster figurines can be found at craft stores and hobby shops. They come in an array of shapes and sizes and are generally inexpensive. Another option is to create a plaster figurine by purchasing a mold and powder ceramic. Mix the powder with water and pour the mixture into the mold. Usually the mold and plaster come together in kit with instructions. When creating a figurine using the powder and mold method, ensure that it has dried completely before painting.
- 2). Select the paint colors needed to complete the project. Acrylic paints are a quick-drying medium to use when painting figurines and can be found at craft stores and hobby shops.
- 3). Find a flat surface to set up a workstation. Lay out newspaper or a drop cloth to protect the work surface. Set out paints and paintbrushes as well as a water container in which to rinse brushes.
- 4). Seal the figurine before painting. Mix equal parts water and craft glue together to create a sealant. Use a medium sized, soft paintbrush to apply the mixture onto the figurine. This seals in the plaster and creates a smooth base for the paint.
- 5). Paint the figurine using a small paint brush. Base-coat all the major colors first, applying two coats of paint. Use a liner brush to add in details and give the figurine a realistic look. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.
- 6). Apply a water-based varnish to the figurine. Use a medium sized brush and cover the entire figurine, ensuring that all cracks and crevices are covered. This seals in the paint and makes the figurine more durable. Allow the varnish to dry.
