How to Avoid Skin Spots

    • 1). Eliminate the practice of excessive tanning if you are in your teens or twenty's. People who like to tan in these early years are more likely to develop skin spots later on in life.

    • 2). Limit your time in the sun. Try to avoid going outdoors when the sun's rays are the strongest from mid morning to mid afternoon hours, especially during summer months. Use a sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or above on a daily basis. Apply it 30 minutes before going out into the sun and reapply throughout the day.

    • 3). Wear protective clothing, sunglasses and hats if you spend a lot of times outdoors to avoid the damaging effects of UV rays. Too much exposure to UVA and UVB rays (called aging rays and burning rays respectively) can cause serious skin damage.

    • 4). Eat a well-balanced diet that includes carrots, yams, collard greens, watercress to minimize the chance of developing skin spots. Foods that contain antioxidants and Vitamin A can help you maintain your skin in good condition. Reduce alcohol use as well.

    • 5). Drink plenty of fluids during the day. Six to eight glasses of water is good to keep your skin hydrated.
