Easy Designs for Glass Painting

Painting on glass gives the object the look of stained glass. Glass paints can be opaque or translucent, which allows light to pass through the object. Painted glass items such as champagne flutes, wine glasses, salt and pepper shakers or glass tea pitchers are perfect for gift giving. It is not complicated to create simple designs on your glass objects that will give the piece a professional look. - Clip pieces of colored masking or painters tape and place them on the reverse side of your glass. Use the paint and paintbrush on the outside and follow the lines to create rectangle and square shapes. Once the paint is dry, you will be able to handle the glass, remove the tape and bake it according to the paint instructions.
- Place masking or painters tape on your glass item to give you a straight line to paint stripes vertically, diagonally or horizontally. After painting the glass piece, simply wait for the design to dry before removing the tape.
- Use the tip of a clean pencil eraser, a cotton swab or an artist paintbrush to place dots of color onto your glass object. Place them in random order over the entire piece of glass and allow it to bake according to the instructions on the paint.
- Many stencils are available to use when painting on glass. You can stick them on the reverse side of the glass and paint from the outside or you can stick them on the surface you are painting and paint inside the actual stencil. You can even trace over cut out designs from magazines or freehand drawings and tape them into place on the inside of the glass to use as a homemade stencil.
- Do not be afraid to attempt abstract or freehand drawings on your glass object. Sometimes squiggly lines or bold slashes of color are all an object needs to be a beautiful work of art. If you mess up or the design does not please you, simply wipe it off with a soft cloth and begin again.
