How to Plant a Five-in-One Apple Tree
- 1). Make sure that the planting site receives full sun and is well-drained.
- 2). Put plants in the ground as soon as possible after you obtain them. Avoid allowing the roots to dry out. Place the plant in a bucket and fill the bucket with enough water to just cover the roots. Soak for 30 minutes and then take the tree to the planting site.
- 3). Dig a hole with a shovel that is deep enough and wide enough to easily contain the roots. A typical hole for a new tree is about 18 inches deep and 3 feet wide.
- 4). Place the tree in the hole and spread out the root system by hand. Mix the dirt removed from the hole with peat moss or compost. Use a mixture of 1 part compost to 2 parts soil.
- 5). Fill in the hole with the mixture. Water generously when you have filled the hole 3/4 of the way to the top with the mixture. Add the rest of the mixture to the hole. Make sure the connection of the rootstock and the scion, called the bud union, remains 2 to 3 inches above the soil. Complete the planting by applying a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch.
