10 Things Not to Do in Stockholm
Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is the largest city in Scandinavia, and it is also a charming city with narrow streets and centuries-old markets, scattered throughout an archipelago of 14 islands. The local people, including me, are proud of their city. This historic metropolis with a provincial soul, has a multitude of museums, an abundance of restaurants, parks, places of entertainment, a nightlife that seems endless and a rich cultural life.
It's all about "never a dull moment," especially in summer when the sun does not set because of its position in distant latitudes.
Maybe it is old as a city, but Stockholm is a great destination for the young people, The capital of Sweden is not yet overcrowded by tourists like so many other European capitals. However, if you go there, you need to know first what NOT to do in the capital of Sweden.
Here are 10 things not to do in Stockholm:
1. Don't be pushy! Stockholm is a city with distant seeming people, generally staying away from each other (even in a super crowded bus or tram). However, they are polite and they will answer your questions as long as you're not too pushy.
2. Don't dress for hot weather or forget to put warm clothes in the suitcase! Stockholm is a city with long and cold winters that seem eternal (lucky you are not forced to pay for heat) and short rainy summers .So, don't forget your jacket!
3. Don't walk too much. Use a means of transportation. Stockholm is also the city where you risk getting lost if you venture to get from one neighborhood to another on foot.
You know the story of "Little Red Riding Hood"? Perfect! But the wolf is an extremely "benevolent" local and the grandma's house is the nearest tram station. All the people here advise you to go slowly, to admire the scenery, to enjoy the weather, to pick mushrooms and all will guide you to the nearest tram station that they know ... a station that usually happens to be light years away. And all of them have the same evil smile as the big bad wolf when they tell you how far it is.
4. Do not explore without your camera! You may come across many historic sites and often even deer. There is no wonder because they have some huge parks here. The first time I saw the deer, I was too shocked to take pictures and I looked around to see if others were as shocked as me. They were not. I concluded that it is something ordinary for them. Fortunately, these animals are accustomed to people. So, you'll have enough time to take a picture.
5. Do not throw anything away! Stockholm is the city where you are declared a public enemy if you're caught throwing something away. There's always someone in the area to look ugly to you and this is worse than a fine. We try to keep this city clean.
6. Do not disturb the cyclists or walk into their way! If you walk on the trail for cyclists and you disturb them ... that is very rude. Bicycle trails are for cyclists. And only for cyclists.
7. Don't rush and squeeze! Getting on the bus is done in a civilized manner. People wait patiently. Guardians in the station look after the enforcement of this rule. So, don't rush unless you want to get a fine.
8. Do not go to Stockholm if you have not enough energy. Stockholm is also the city that invites you to live the moment, to live your life to the fullest, without inhibitions, without regrets. Anywhere, anytime.
9. Do not expect to buy alcoholic beverages in corner stores or during nighttime! The locals buy alcohol with a card. So, if you want to buy wine, beer, champagne, cognac, whiskey, you're practically forced to go to the particular alcoholic drinks store "Systembolaget" ... and not too late. Note that Swedes are very sociable when the amount of alcohol in our veins exceeds the quantity of blood...
10. Don't be grumpy. Be friendly and openminded. Here people are happy ... very happy ... especially after a few beers! So, if you want to make friends, buy a box of beer and go out into the city.
