How to Jailbreak a Regular iPod

    • 1). Download the Spirit Jailbreak tool. (See Resources.) The Spirit Jailbreak tool is free to download for Windows, Mac and Linux computer systems. Before you can run or download the Spirit Jailbreak tool, you will first need to download iTunes 9 in order for it to function. Otherwise, the Spirit Jailbreak tool will not download.

    • 2). Plug in your iPod device. It should be recognized by iTunes 9. Once your iPod is recognized, back up your iPod device to your "iTunes Library" along with any other important saved documents, and then "Sync" your iPod. The purpose for backing up your iTunes Library is to allow you to restore your settings just in case you will need to clean your device later, and it ensures that all media on your iPod will be restored.

    • 3). Open the Spirit Jailbreak tool on your computer. It will open in a small window, and should display the message "iPod connected." Then click "Jailbreak." If you don't see the message, reconnect your device and, then, open the Spirit Jailbreak tool again.

    • 4). Wait for the iPod Touch to be jailbroken. When it's going through the process of jailbreaking, do not interfere by touching your computer or playing with the iPod to avoid a crash. Once you see a message that says "Restore Complete," the device will restart and display a spinning pinwheel icon to open up a colorful screen, and then finally return to your regular home page and settings. Your device is now jailbroken.

    • 5). Restart your device. You will see a new icon on your home page called Cydia. Open it to display your new App (Application) Store. The regular App Store will still work. Click the button that says, "Make my life easier, thanks!" This will allow you to back up your device activation profile and keep you from losing your ability to jailbreak in the event that you mistakenly upgrade your iPod software.
