How to Make 3-D Images From Two Pictures

    • 1). Photograph a scene you would like to make into a 3-D image. The subject should not be against a flat background, such as a wall. Instead, the scene should contain angles and depth (objects clearly at different distances from the camera) according to the STEREO Learning Center, an online site maintained by NASA.

    • 2). Move about 2.5 inches to the left or right (the approximate distance between a person's eyes) and take another photograph of the same scene. Don't move forward or backward or change the camera angle. A tripod or other object can help keep the camera steady at a fixed height and angle

    • 3). Upload the pictures to the computer by either copying from the digital camera or scanning from the prints.

    • 4). Start the image editing software. Click "File" and then "Open." Locate both images, and open each one. Resize the images, if necessary, so the same size settings for each. Convert both images to grayscale by selecting "Image," then "Mode" and "Grayscale."

    • 5). Identify the picture that was taken to the right. Save it with the file name "Right" to help with identification. Identify the picture that was taken to the left and save it with the file name "Left."

    • 6). Select the image labeled "Right" and convert it back to Red, Blue and Green (RGB) by clicking "Image," "Mode," and "RGB." The image will still appear black and white on the monitor.

    • 7). Select "Channels" and click on the word "Red" to select the Red channel. Do not click on the small eye icon -- doing so only selects which channels are visible on the monitor.

    • 8). Click on the photo labeled "Left" to select it. Hold down the keyboard's "Ctrl" key and type "A" to select the entire image. Copy the image by holding down "Ctrl" and typing "C."

    • 9). Click on the "Right" photo to select it. Hold down the keyboard's "Ctrl" key and type "V" to paste the copied image.

    • 10

Return to the "Channels" palette and click on the box next to RGB. Only the red channel is highlighted. Your image should now appear as a black and white photo with a red and blue shadow effect.

    • 11

Align the right and left eye images by selecting the "Move" tool and centering the two images on the subject of the photo, attempting to eliminate as much of the shadowing from the subject as possible. The rest of the image will have shadowing.

    • 12

Crop the image if necessary using the "Crop" tool. Save the image.
