How to Thread a Singer Treadle Machine

    • 1). Raise the presser foot by pulling up on the silver latch located on the back of the machine, just behind the needle. Turn the flywheel, located on the upper right side of the treadle machine, away from you until the needle is as high as it will go. Place your spool of thread so that it unwinds counterclockwise on the spool pin located on the upper top right of your treadle machine.

    • 2). Pull the thread tail to the left and slightly toward you to as you feed it through the front eyelet on the top left side of the machine. Starting at the right of the eyelet and pull the thread through to the left. Pull it to the left and away from you and feed the thread through the remaining eyelet, which is located to the rear left of the front eyelet, this time pulling the thread from left to right.

    • 3). Pull the thread over to the left and down the left side of the machine. Locate the tension knob, which is on the left side of the machine toward the back and is the size of a nickel with two silver discs located behind it. Pull the thread to the back of the tension knob and place it under the knob, between the two silver discs, from the back of the machine to the front. Hook the thread on the small eyelet on the front side of the tension disc.

    • 4). Pull the thread straight up from the tension disc. Feed your thread through the slot in the threader bar, located directly above the tension disc. Feed the thread from the back to the front, pulling the thread toward you. The thread should pull easily, with only a slight amount of tension.

    • 5). Feed the thread through the eyelet located on the front bottom left side of the machine by starting at the top of the eyelet and pulling the thread through to the bottom. Continue pulling the thread down to the thread guide located directly above the needle. Place the thread through this thread guide from top to bottom. Pull the thread down and place it in the eye of your needle, from left to right, and continue pulling until you have at least an 8-inch tail.
