Fuschia Hanging Plants
- Fuchsias in hanging baskets are unable to develop lengthy root systems. To keep the plants healthy, gardeners should water the plants regularly. Water-starved fuchsias wilt dramatically, according to the National Gardening Association. Frequent watering also helps dislodge mites, the most common fuchsia pests.
- To keep hanging baskets of fuchsias healthy, it is important to be consistent, according to fuchsia gardener Ron Monnier of the American Fuchsia Society. Use the same potting soil each time and feed plants frequently with a fertilizer appropriate for the basket size.
- Pruning dead flowers and fruit pod from the fuchsia helps the plant continue blooming. Carefully clip off dead flowers after the spent flowers dry out.
- Fuchsias require cool, shady conditions. They prefer nighttime temperatures around 50 degrees and daytime temperatures below 80 degrees. Hang baskets from hooks in shady areas of the porch or yard, or from the lower branches of a shade tree. In the winter, move the baskets indoors or to a location protected from frost.
